This is an rare official military conversion of a WWI MKIII/III* SMLE to a .22 training rifle used to train recruits. Almost certainly, originally a WWI rifle chambered in .303", this has then been converted in 1922 (date stamp on LHS of receiver at wrist) to .22 with a further FTR (Factcory Thorough Repair) in 1954. Outwardly, it retains all the features of a standard SMLE but has a modified bolt (off centre firing pin and larger extractor claw) and is obviously fitted with a .22 barrel. Interestingly, the MKIV was designed to be a single shot weapon so although fitted with a magazine, the spring and follower are removed with the sole purpose of the magazine to be to catch empty cases! In good used condition with the majority metalwork finish and good stocks. Fully matching numbers including the stock. Complete with one magazine. Current deactivation with a moving bolt, moving trigger (under spring pressure), working safety and removable magazine but without the ability dry fire or field strip. See our video showing an example of this type of deactivated firearm here.
