SOLD. A very good example of a Sharps 1868 Metallic Cartridge Conversion Carbine. Around 30 different types of carbine were used during the US Civil War and basically if you had a design that could be maufactured it was purchased by either the Union or Confederacy and put into service. This would have started life as a New Model 1863 issued during the Civil War around 65,000 examples were supplied by Sharps to the Union. Around 25,000 were converted by Sharps to metallic cartridge and re-designated either the Model 1867 or 1868. The 1868 was actually more accurate than the 67 as it had a barrel liner fitted for 50/70 calibre. These cartridge conversions were subsequently used extensively in the (wild) west during the Indian Wars. This example (SN: 52964) is in very good overall condition with a blue/grey patina and good stocks. It looks to have an old refinish and has a little light pitting on the lock plate. Fully working action and completely strippable. This item is not deactivated in any way, but rather is chambered in a UK obsolete calibre. As such perfectly legal to purchase and own in the UK as an antique or curio PROVIDED it remains unfired. It is sold as an antique/curio and DWSUK provides no guarantees on its suitability/safety should it be purchased with the intention of adding it onto a FAC/live firing it.
